My Journey

In my family, stories were how we communicated—full of exaggeration, emphasis, and gesture. A chair pushed back, a chest lifted, a pause lingered—each moment drawing the audience of tías y primas (y yo) into a world that was collectively celebrated and grieved, ancestral yet immediate. That spirit drives me as an artist: to create work that is deeply collaborative and immersive— theater that sparks the imagination while honoring the shared act of creation. As a first-generation Cuban American forging a career in directing, I have come to recognize that this is where my passion for directing began.

Over the past fourteen years, I have honed my craft by embracing every directing opportunity— experiences that eventually led me to teach theater, where I discovered the creative potential I could help unlock in others. As a teacher, I strengthened my ability to guide actors, cultivating imagination, collaboration, and a sense of ownership in the process. A detour into human resources and leadership development revealed another dimension of my artistry: a leader capable of building trust, fostering psychological safety, and guiding teams with intention. These experiences taught me how to create spaces where artists feel empowered to take risks, ask questions, and play as we build a show together.

A desire to grow my creative practice and tell bigger stories led me to found Latiné Theater Lab, a company dedicated to sharing the stories of our communities in English. I focus primarily on magical realism, a genre rarely performed locally, crafting experiences grounded in truth yet elevated by poetry and spectacle. These stories’ openness to interpretation creates a runway for imagination, inviting both artists and audiences into worlds where emotion and culture intertwine.

I aim to create theater that is collaborative, daring, and transformational—challenging artists to think bigger and take bolder risks, while cultivating trust and curiosity. Latiné Theater Lab embodies the theater I aspire to make: a space where heritage, imagination, and artistry converge to tell our stories.
